Thailand’s First International Horticultural Expo
Wins BIE Recognition and A1 Accreditation 
The Kingdom of Thailand presented its official bid to host Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 – International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King to the 2005 General Assembly Meeting of the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) in Paris, France, on December 1, 2005.

To be awarded A1 status, host countries must meet the stringent standards and guidelines established by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and must be sanctioned by the BIE. Endorsement of Thailand’s bid is based on an assessment of capabilities and readiness to host a BIE-recognized international horticultural exposition. 

Following the presentation to the esteemed members of the BIE General Assembly by Mr Adisak Sreesunpagit, Director General of the Department of Agriculture and leader of the delegation representing the Royal Thai Government and the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 Organizing Committee, the 98 member nations voted unanimously to officially award A1 status to Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006. 

Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006, one of the world’s finest tropical flower, fruit and plant expositions befitting the name, Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 – International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King, will be hosted in the city of Chiang Mai from November 1, 2006 to January 31, 2007. 

The fact that the General Assembly voted unanimously is a reflection of the confidence that the exposition meets the qualifying criteria and BIE provisions as required for A1 accreditation. These include the size of the exposition site, the duration of the exposition, readiness in terms of project implementation, world-class standards of project management, and the presentation of content of international interest. Of particular interest are the quality and impressive variety of plants, especially tropical flora, to be showcased.

The BIE General Assembly also awarded A1 status to Zaragoza Expo 2008, being hosted by Spain in 2008, and Shanghai Expo, being hosted by China in 2010.

BIE recognition of Thailand’s readiness for A1 expo status is a very significant development for the country. Thailand is the first Southeast Asian member and the third Asian country (after China and Japan) to be awarded A1 accreditation by the venerable body. This highlights Thailand’s increasingly active and important role on the world stage and the country’s contribution to the global economy in the areas of agriculture, horticulture and the promotion of international tourism.

Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 – International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King, one of the grand celebrations being hosted by the Royal Thai Government to celebrate the auspicious occasion of the Sixtieth Anniversary Celebration of His Majesty the King of Thailand's Accession to the Throne in 2006 and His Majesty's Eightieth Birthday in 2007, will be hosted in the city of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand from November 1, 2006 to January 31, 2007. 

Thailand will be joined by her international friends – nations with whom Thailand has shared historical, cultural, diplomatic and trade ties, many spanning centuries. In total, 14 nations have confirmed participation in the International Garden section of Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006. They are Spain, Belgium, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Qatar, Iran, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mauritania and Brazil.
