King Birth Day
And Thai National Day On 5 Of December
During this month of December, on the 5th to be exact, Thailand's revered Monarch, His Majesty King Bhumibol, will celebrate his 78 rd Birthday.
A day of Thai's national celebration, rejoicing, prayers and thanksgiving for such is the high esteem the Thai people hold for their King. And His Majesty King Bhumibol, Rama IX of the Chakri Dynasty of Thailand.
His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, the Royal Father of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, was born on January 1, 1892 to Their Majesties King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) and Queen Savang Vadhana of Thailand. The Prince was an alumnus of Harvard School of Public Health, and Harvard Medical School, as well as member of the Alpha Omega Alpha. His wife: Her Royal Highness Somdej Phra Sri Nakarindra Boromrajajonnani (Princess Mother of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej ofThailand) was an alumna of Simmons College. (His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej himself was born at Mount Auburn Hospital in the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts.)
The significance of Prince Mahidol of Songkla's life lies not only in his contribution to medical education and public health in Thailand, but in his example to all mankind of selflessness and dedication to the welfare of human beings.
In 1992 Thailand commemorated the 100th anniversary of his birth. The honour and deep regard in which the Thai people hold this "Father of Thai Medicine" should not remain isolated to one country, for His Royal Highness was dedicated to life Itself, affording all men equal dignity and the right to health and happiness. Sacrificing his own health, finances, and privileged position, to upholding his strong belief in the right of all men to medical care, he dedicated himself to his countrymen primarily because it was they who were in greatest need.
Never one to seek publicity, but always mindful of the dignity of those with whom he came into contact, it is doubtful that, were he alive today, he would see himself in so noble a light. For His Royal Highness, to serve his King and humanity was reward enough, and in this he amply succeeded. The commemorative Event in 1992 was an invitation to the world to come to know the man, an eminent educator, scientist and humanist, who would dutifully serve without asking for anything in return.
HM has served his people in many ways. One thing that deserves some more attention here is his starting of the so called "Royal Projects". The Royal Project in the field of Agriculture were started with the main aim to prevent farmers in the North to cultivate poppy flowers in order to make opium. HM The King has personally sorted out in his private gardens what alternatives there are (and sometimes he sadly failed by promoting alternatives that did not prosper after all in Northern Thailand). Most of these projects were -and are-
successful, however.
For example: When you fly Thai Airways International, the coffee and tea you will get on board has been grown in the North of Thailand, in one of these Royal Projects.
Another Royal Project in the Agricultural Field is the so called "Royal Rain". Farmers in Thailand, and especially those in the North, are very poor. When there is no rain for a long time, there will be a very limited harvest or no harvest at all, which means no income at all. Therefor, as an initiative of HM The King, in very dry times small crystals are spread over clouds by planes and as a result rain will fall. I know that this method is not free from criticism from environmentalists, and HM knows this too, but if the life of poor farmers literally depends on rain, other interests should be considered as secondary.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, is well regarded by his subjects as "The Light of Thailand."
That as a young Prince not expecting ever to be monarch, the King has displayed a most remarkable wisdom
and talent for this most onerous of "jobs." May he reign long and may we, at LOCAL CHIANGMAI GUIDE AND ALL THAIS wish him a
Wonderful, Healthy and Happy 78 rd Birthday on the 5th December. LONG live the King !
